Hi everyone! My mentor shared this lesson with me a few years back. I asked him this question, “why can’t I achieve certain things in life?”
My mentor replied, “Let me share with you a story about a piece of wood.”
This piece of wood dreams of becoming the best furniture in the world. Every single day, this piece of wood started asking how it can be the best furniture in the world. “How? How? How?”
One day, an idea came to its mind. It is very simple. “All I need to do is to find the best carpenter in the world, to make me the best furniture in the world.” That’s the answer! So of it went, hoping to find the best carpenter to make its dreams come true.
So this piece of wood took days… Even months… And finally, it found a man walking pass him. On his forehead had the words, “Best carpenter in the world”.
The piece of wood was very excited. It said, “Carpenter! Carpenter!”
The carpenter looked at the piece of wood in shock. How can this piece of wood talk?
The wood replied, “That’s a small thing! You need to listen to my dream!”
Curiously, the carpenter asked the wood, “what is your dream?”
The wood said with a lot of conviction, “I want to be the best furniture in the world… Make me the best furniture in the world!”
The carpenter looked at the piece of wood and he asked, “why do you want to be the best furniture in the world?”
The wood replied, “I want to be respected… I want to inspire other pieces of wood to be like me! I want to live my life to the fullest potential, rather than just being a piece of normal wood! I want to be admired by people…”
It gave all kinds of good positive energy to the carpenter and the carpenter was very impressed. “Yes, I will help you!” But when he took a look at the wood, he said, “Sorry, I cannot make you the best furniture in the world.”
The wood was shocked. “Why? Why can’t you make me the best furniture in the world?”
The carpenter replied, “because you are not a piece of quality wood”.
My mentor finishes his story and he asked, “What is the moral of the story?”
If this piece of wood… The furniture is your dreams… your goals in life… Can be your business. The carpenter is your resources. Your connection, your capital and your network. He said, “Jia Jun, most of the people are like that piece of wood. We can’t change how we are born. We can be born into a poor family or a rich family. We can’t choose and we can’t change. But we can certainly change something…”
Your attitude, your mind… You can certainly learn soft skills or skills that enable you to reach your dreams and your goals in life. Most people focus on the resources they do not have. Then they keep complaining and do nothing about it. Because of circumstances. Because they are not born rich. Because they don’t have the right connection. This is just a small part of success.
